Metric Century

Conditions were ideal for bicycling. Therefore, I decided to go for a metric century, that is 100 kilometers or 62.1371 miles. The ride was along the Schuylkill River Trail and then the Perkiomen trail, which included this hill.

Of course, going down was fun. Coming up was quite a bit of work. Got to use that granny gear on my bike. Wow! What a workout. In the end, I managed to go 67 miles, including about 30 on gravel, which was a good test of my new Jamis Renegade. Bike did fine. Now I need a rest.

Disc Brakes, bicycle

My new Jamis Renegade Elite is my first bicycle with disc brakes. What an improvement! In various conditions, these brakes are smooth and powerful.

The response is reliable, even when things get wet. And, it only takes a little pressure to apply them. Given that my rides are getting progressively longer and with more inclines, it’ll be a nice feature, one that improves safety.

Slow and Steady, bicycling

Bicycling is not only lots of fun, it’s great exercise. I’ve been adding miles to my routine over the past 6 months, gradually stretching those rides. Here’s a look at my Garmin GPS from a ride last week:

Got to 40 miles. Took me quite a while, but was a steady ride with a few breaks. My goal is 75 miles in a single ride. Hope to get there by the end of this year. No matter what, I’ll shed some pounds in the process. Be safe riding.

Schuylkill River Trail

The Schuylkill River Trail traces the river of the same name, providing a location for recreational activities from Philadelphia all the way to Reading and beyond. I’ve ridden my bicycle on it many times but not lately. That is, until today:

I rode more than 20 miles, at an easy pace. The weather was chilly, but plenty of people out.

With ample places to park at various locations along the trail, there are many ways to access the route. While the views are a bit bleak now at the end of winter, there still are plenty of sights to see.

Get out there and get some exercise. It’s fun and good for you.
