Cyclocross anyone?

Readers of my blog will note recent posts about bicycling. Well, not only have the distance of the rides been extended beyond 70 miles, there have been some cyclocross type of additions to the course. Here’s a photo from the Philadelphia Art Museum steps:

Yes, those are the famous steps from the movie, Rocky. At this point, the bike was shouldered and carried up for the following view:

Next time, there will be no pause to snap photos. These type of cross training activities make for a more interesting and challenging ride. Plus, they’re tons of fun. Enjoy the ride; share the road.

Selle Italia Saddle

As I’ve been posting lately, the Jamis Renegade is running very well. I’ve logged more than 350 miles on it. One thing I wanted to change was the saddle. I decided to go with the Selle Italia gel saddle that you see here:

The is the “TRK” model. I find it much more comfortable than the saddle it replaces. Also, it sits on standard rails, which means I can mount a small seat bag underneath to keep a few essentials. Looking forward to many miles ahead on this saddle. If things go right, I’ll log about 1,500 more this year.

Disc Brakes, bicycle

My new Jamis Renegade Elite is my first bicycle with disc brakes. What an improvement! In various conditions, these brakes are smooth and powerful.

The response is reliable, even when things get wet. And, it only takes a little pressure to apply them. Given that my rides are getting progressively longer and with more inclines, it’ll be a nice feature, one that improves safety.

Jamis Renegade Elite

Well, it was new bike day. I’m pleased to introduce the latest member of the fleet, the Jamis Renegade Elite. See photo below:

Jamis considers this an “adventure” bike and I have to agree. It features a full carbon frame, disc brakes, Shimano Ultegra running gear, and a bunch of other features. Considering I’m used to riding a Trek 8000 hard tail mountain bike, this is a much different ride. In the first place, the Renegade has much less rolling resistance due to more narrow tires and less weight. Acceleration feels snappy. The ride is a little more reactive. It’s FUN. Seriously. This is a great bike for the type of riding I do and plan to do. I’ll report more as I log the miles. Always wear your safety gear!
