Disc Brakes, bicycle

My new Jamis Renegade Elite is my first bicycle with disc brakes. What an improvement! In various conditions, these brakes are smooth and powerful.

The response is reliable, even when things get wet. And, it only takes a little pressure to apply them. Given that my rides are getting progressively longer and with more inclines, it’ll be a nice feature, one that improves safety.

Renegade Elite, update

Went for my longest ride so far this year, a little more than 50 miles, on the Jamis Renegade Elite. Some of this riding was along the river, with very little climbing. The rest was rolling terrain. In other words, a longer ride but not terribly difficult.

The Jamis Renegade Elite is performing well. I took it onto some short gravel stretches to get the feel, which is confident and snappy. The Shimano gearset seems to be a fit for me, although some cable adjustments need to be made. This is to be expected as cables stretch a bit in the early days. Of course, the saddle requires some breaking in. I do prefer this hydraulic disc breaks. As some of my riding is on streets, one needs to grab the brakes for less than courteous drivers. These stop the bike quickly. All in all, things are working out great. I’ll be making a video soon. Stay tuned.

Jamis Renegade Elite

Well, it was new bike day. I’m pleased to introduce the latest member of the fleet, the Jamis Renegade Elite. See photo below:

Jamis considers this an “adventure” bike and I have to agree. It features a full carbon frame, disc brakes, Shimano Ultegra running gear, and a bunch of other features. Considering I’m used to riding a Trek 8000 hard tail mountain bike, this is a much different ride. In the first place, the Renegade has much less rolling resistance due to more narrow tires and less weight. Acceleration feels snappy. The ride is a little more reactive. It’s FUN. Seriously. This is a great bike for the type of riding I do and plan to do. I’ll report more as I log the miles. Always wear your safety gear!
