Reporters at Work

There’s been some international news coming from Aruba in the past week or so. A swarm of reporters has descended on the island to bring live video to the world. Here is a photo of a group of them working in San Nicolaas, trying to get the shot of a suspect being escorted from the police station.

Check out the intrepid cameraman atop the van.

I have to admit, these people work very hard to get the shot. They were camped out all day for about ten seconds of material. That’s a long time to be in the Aruban sun without a drink. It’s a tough job that deserves more respect than it gets.

Tropical Sangria

Sangria is one of those drinks that lends itself to local interpretation. It shows up in a wide range of flavors, including a white-wine based variety. The more traditional version was recently sampled by those of us here at The Bent Page. We enjoyed several glasses at the Screaming Eagle restaurant in Aruba. Here’s a photo.

The trick is to be careful how much fruit is put in the glass. It can get overly sweet or tangy depending on the type used. The good thing is, sangria refreshes as much as it delights, which is why a liberal amount is always recommended. Enjoy responsibly.

Dangerous Text

No, we’re not talking about sudden revelations from government documents. It’s those nasty people who send and receive messages while driving. This foolish activity causes plenty of accidents, including here in Aruba where the local paper (El Diario) ran the following cartoon yesterday.

The ambulance tech is talking about how strange the accident is and the cop says something along the lines that the driver can’t use the brake when he’s texting with his feet. At any rate, this is no laughing matter. There have been a number of public service ads running in the United States about texting while driving. Still, we all see people doing this. Maybe we should remind each other that the driver’s seat is for driving. Leave the texting to someone else.

Bon dia.

Linear Park Construction, Aruba

Aruba’s Coastal Linear Park is well underway. This is going to be a promenade of sorts stretching from Queen Beatrix Airport all the way to the hotel area. The following photo was taken across the street from the Talk of the Town Hotel, near the traffic circle at the Cas di Cultura.

That’s a tremendous number of pavers they’re using! It also appears that kiosks like the one shown below will host shops or info centers or snack stands, which would be welcome to those using the park.

The project appears to be a great asset in the making. Hopefully it will be possible to ride bicycles, walk, and just sit by the sea for a look at the sunset. Aruba deserves credit for installing such a feature, making an already welcoming island that much better.

Bon dia.
