Matchbook Memento

Matchbooks used to be a nice memento from restaurants and bars or weddings and other events. These days, I imagine, they are no longer the keepsakes they once were. Fewer people smoking and no real need for matches has taken away this micro-design memory jogger. Nonetheless, while cleaning out a drawer, I found this little book from Chumley’s, the old speak-easy on Barrow Street in New York City:

Had many great times at that little place: food, drink, laughs, and more. It was located behind an unmarked door, maintaining its speakeasy charm at 86 Barrow Street as the number on the reverse of the matchbook implies:

An "86" for the street number of Chumley's.

As far as I know, the place is closed at this time. Ah, well, still have the memories and this little memento as a reminder. Cheers!

The things you find…

Every once in a while, I’ve been known to dump out the drawers in my desk, which are prone to fill with all sorts of items. Today, while sifting the flotsam and jetsam, I came across my photo pass from a visit to the World Trade Center, the original one. Here it is:

I visited a company I did business with there on the 36th floor the Friday before the attack. The following week, I was aboard a ship and didn’t know for many more days that my friends and business associates all survived. Sadly, many others were not so lucky. I’ll keep this the rest of my life as a tangible reminder of what happened.

A return to Republic, lunch

Republic serves a quick (if noisy) lunch at their place on New York City’s Union Square. I’ve been stopping in here for years and have never been disappointed. They have those giant noodle dishes as well as a selection of others over rice, which are more to my liking. Here’s a look at the fried wonton appetizer:

That’s a great way to start the meal. The sauce is tangy with lots of flavor and just a touch of heat. And those wontons are packed with diced stuff that will get your taste buds excited. Moving on to the main course, I went with the grilled pork chop over “broken rice,” which is how the menu describes it. Take a look:

That’s a tasty bowl full of goodness. The portion seems a little small, but with the appetizer, it’s the perfect amount. Seating at this joint is a little crowded, giving you the opportunity to eaves drop or meet new people. Enjoy every meal!

A few days before Sept. 11, 2001…

On September 9, 2001, I left New York Harbor aboard a ship. On the way down the Hudson River, I snapped various photos of the skyline, including the one below (reproduced poorly here, but the original is perfectly clear thanks to ideal weather, a Hasselblad camera, Zeiss lens, and Kodak Ektachrome film). Note the structure in the upper right portion of the frame.

Never forget this world is a dangerous place.
