Ronda, Spain, again, this time a video of the interior of the Iglesia Santa Maria de la Encarnacion. Fine displays of icons, books, and more. Take a look.
I remain amazed at how many fine examples of such churches exist in Spain. They have survive, wars, economic turmoil, and worse. Yet, they persevere. Amazing.
Spain, England, France, it doesn’t matter where, I have yet to find a cathedral I didn’t like. The cathedral in Segovia, Spain, is one of the largest in Europe. It towers over the town and anyone who enters its environs. This was my second visit to Segovia, and I didn’t pass up the opportunity to make a video. Take a look.
To think that video only showed a small portion of what was inside. The people walking about give a sense of scale to the building. They barely rise to the top of the bases of those massive columns. There are many more relics, chapels, and paintings to be seen, too. Bring a jacket because all that stone holds the cold air, which also makes it a nice place to step in when it’s hot outside. The cat at the end was one of several living on the back steps. I’ll have some photos and video of them in the future.
While in Sigüenza, Spain, I came across the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Huertos. It is a Franciscan monastery built in the 16th Century as you can see from this plaque on the wall.
An here’s a look at the building itself.
A fairly imposing structure, I decided to go in for a closer look, when I came across this sign, explaining how some of the monks were buried in the space adjacent to the church.
Much to my surprise, the grave pictured in the diagram above can be seen under a sheet of glass on a few steps to the left. Here it is:
Wow! I wasn’t expecting to actually look down into the grave. But, there they are, the bones for all to see. Seems a bit macabre, or even somewhat disrespectful. Then again, the faithful may be attracted by such relics. It’s hard to tell. Either way, it brings history into sharp focus. There were real people living and dying here. The evidence is everywhere to be seen.
This Iglesia Espiritu Santo is located in Ronda, Spain. The church was only a few feet from the place where I was staying, not that I can resist an old church whether it be around the corner or over hill and dale. For the price of a few Euros, the public is allowed to climb the bell tower, which I did, and survey the interior on one’s own. Thus, I made this video, complete with a view over a part of the town as well as most of the inside. Take a look.
Definitely worth a few Euros and climbing that bell tower was good exercise. Ronda was one of my favorite towns in Spain. I have much more to post about it, so keep checking in.
