Behind the dam…

Well, it’s not exactly a dam, but rather a coffer dam, or a door, or the thing that holds back the Delaware River at the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Take a look at this photo:

Click on the photo for a larger version, and count the numbers on the left, indicating feet above the bottom. Then imagine all the water that thing is holding back. If it lets go, you’re going to get deluged by the full force of the river. Thanks to a friend, I was able to check out the laying of keel blocks in this graving dock. More posts to follow, hopefully, showing the vessel on the blocks, which is an amazing thing in its own right.

Sometimes you crave those comfort foods that really hit the spot. For me, it too often is the cheeseburger, as you see in this glorious example:

Vertical Flight

When it comes to point to point flying, the helicopter wins hands down. Of course, a price must be paid in terms of fuel and other overall costs. A rotary wing aircraft is not cheap. But they will impress you in many categories. Here’s a look at a Sikorsky.

This corporate machine delivers people in relative comfort. Around the Northeast USA, helicopters like this make a lot of sense in the business world as their clients are above the traffic and where they want to be when they need to be there. No matter what you’re flying, always do your checklist.

Looking Down

Flying always presents the opportunity for interesting perspectives. On a recent commercial flight, I spotted this scene below, a spit of land along the east coast of the USA:

I’m not sure exactly where this was. I lost track of our location. Still, looking down from 35,000 feet can be very instructive, giving one a sense of how big, or how small, this planet is. Take time to enjoy the view wherever you are.
