Nikon F3

Way back when (the 1980’s anyway) the Nikon F3 was a top of the line 35mm camera. After saving my money for a long time, I bought a new one in 1986. It’s a little dusty, but here it is, complete with the MD4 motor drive:

This camera has traveled everywhere I’ve gone, never once missing a shot. Here’s a look at the other side:

And speaking of the MD4 motor drive, the ergonomics of it were perfect for my hands as seen in the next photo:

The motor drive, with 8 AA batteries, made for a sturdy hand-hold and great base. I’m not sure how many rolls of film I ran through this camera, thousands at the very least. Having just found a local lab that will process b/w film, I’ve decided to take it out for a spin, just to see how things look. Of course, it’s all digital now, but the simplicity of this camera (in today’s terms) can’t be beat. Remember, it’s the quality of the light, much more than the quality of the camera, that makes for great photos. Try it, you’ll see.

Tugboat Sunk

Digging into the archives, I found photos of the sinking of the Delilah, an old tugboat that finally found new life as an artificial reef.

The photo is a scan from an negative, with the original image made in the late 1990’s. Here’s a fuzzy shot of the last moments of the sinking:

In fact, I think this was in January of 1998 off the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Surely the hulk is still down there making a home for sea creatures.

Clément x’plor USH

Last year when I purchased the Jamis Renegade Elite, the bicycle came with Clément x’plot USH tires as you can see in this photo:

These 35 X 700C tires have more than 3,200 miles on them now and still going very strong. I’ve ridden about 20% gravel and 80% urban asphalt. They’ve stood up to wet/dry/mixed conditions as well. Take a look at the chevron tread:

The center line provides some grip with not so much rolling resistance. For cornering, not the diamonds on the side, which served very well. As you can see, these tires have a long way to go. Soon, I’ll be back on more gravel, which will cause more wear. Please note, despite having tubeless wheels, I run the Clément set with tubes. That’s how they came from Jamis. There have been no problems with the tubes. Enjoy every ride.

Making Real Estate

The old saying goes, “Buy real estate. They aren’t making any more.” Well, that’s generally true. However, in some places, they are making real estate. Take a look at this recent photo from New York City:

The contractor built a sheet piling wall and then filled in behind it. Looks like they’re also building a new pier there, which is essentially real estate above the water. Either way, it seems NYC is gains a few acres here.
