Rivers of Clouds

Very pleasant flight this morning. Took off from home base and headed north by slightly east. After passing over Allentown, the rolling hills of Pennsylvania were filled with rivers of clouds. Here’s the photo:

That photo was taken at 5,500 feet above sea level. Continuing north, I stopped off at Mount Pocono (KMPO). Great airport. Here’s the view from 3,500:

It’s nice to have crossing runways because it gives you flexibility depending upon wind direction for landing. So, another couple of hours in the log book. The Diamond DA-40 flew like a dream and Allentown Approach did a great job keeping traffic flowing. Can’t wait for the next flight.

Touch and Go, flying video

As long as we’re on the subject of flying, here’s a video showing a takeoff from Brandywine Airport, a touch and go landing at Easton, MD, and another landing back at Brandywine. Let’s head out to the flight line.

Checklists are one way pilots are sure to cover all the steps for a given portion of the flight. They come in handy for all types of things, too, not just flying. Make one for yourself, perhaps for packing your vacation suitcase. See you at the airport soon.

Here’s a look at the sunrise from 35,000 feet.

A beautiful sight and the beginning of another great trip. Airplanes are akin to time machines. They transport you there fast enough to give you more opportunities to see and do the things you’d like. Just don’t forget to coast a little, a nice glide into your favorite spot.

Cessna 172 Panel Overview

The Cessna 172 is a venerable aircraft in which hundreds of thousands of people have learned to fly. The following video gives you a basic overview of the instrument panel in a typical 172, explaining what each instrument does. Take a look:

Fairly easy to remember, eh? Of course. These instruments have been around for decades, and I highly recommend anyone learning to fly master them prior to moving on to digital cockpits. I’ll be posting more flying videos soon, including footage taken in the cockpit, which can be exciting and fun to watch. Remember, always do your checklist!
