Wedding in Paradise

One of my good friends here in Aruba is the Reverend Robert Gibson. He’s lived in Aruba for a long time and has the pleasure of officiating at a number of weddings ever year. Here is a photo of him in action.

This lovely couple chose a barefoot wedding on the beach, just as the sun was setting. Aruba is a great place for a beach wedding. The weather is (relatively) predictable, and the beach is fantastic. There is also Reverend Gibson who performs a fabulous and romantic ceremony that couples the world over remember for the rest of their lives. Let’s take a closer look.

Note the details, the path lined with shells, the colors of the approaching sunset shining on the bride’s face, and the crystal clear water just a few yards away. One more look at the Reverend Gibson in action.

Some people renew their vows in this manner, too. Whether it is your first time or for all time, Aruba is a great place for your wedding and honeymoon, the perfect place to start your new life. Enjoy the journey, which is the destination that never ends.

Windsurfing Lessons, Aruba

People have asked me about windsurfing in Aruba. If you’re new to the sport, my suggestion is to head to the northwest edge of the island where there are a number of operators like the ones shown below. (If you’re on the main road, continue past the Marriot hotel and take the first cutoff toward the ocean. Can’t miss them.)

These guys are professionals. They have all the equipment and staff to help you learn the art. Aruba’s winds are usually cracking so you’re practically guaranteed a good day for this activity. (Many of the same operators also provide kitesurfing lessons as well.) Here’s a shot of an instructor in action.

Remember that the winds blow off shore, meaning they will try to push you out to sea. Remain aware how far your are from the beach. Don’t want to end up in Venezuela or somewhere else, unless you’re running from the law or someone’s husband. Last spring a woman kite surfed from Venezuela to Aruba, which I thought was quite an impressive feat. Just goes to show what the wind can do for you.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking of giving this a try, especially the kite surfing. Taking photos of these guys in action is difficult because they move FAST, perform stunts, and generally seem to be having the time of their lives. Whatever sport you choose, remember, safety first. Be sure to consult the professionals, wear proper safety equipment, and don’t go beyond you talent. You don’t want to ruin your vacation with a trip to the hospital. Enjoy!

Motorcycles, Island Style

If you like to tour on motorcycles, you’ll find a couple of operations on the island of Aruba that can set you up with a rig. There is a Harley-Davidson dealer as well as an independent operator who is located at the Paseo Herencia Mall by the large hotels. You can rent motorcycles as well as go on a guided tour with a guy who knows the island inside and out. Here’s a photo of his bikes:

The tour usually starts on the north end of the island, heads up to the lighthouse at California point where you’ll have a great view of the Caribbean. Then you’ll motor south, check out some local spots, great scenery, possibly stop in to a local fisherman’s wharf. Eventually you’ll work you way into San Nicolaas, my favorite town, and stop at Charlie’s Bar. From there, you’re on your own and it’s easy to find your way back. Then again, half the fun may be getting lost. You’ll only have a great time. On this island, you can’t go wrong.

As things progress here at the Bent Page, I’ll continue to add more photos and descriptions of activities, restaurants, and things to see in Aruba. Please let me know of your own experiences of if I’ve left anything out.
