Here’s another look at the Colosseum from the interior, this time a video pan from the floor level. It gives you a good sense of what it might have been like looking up at the audience.
If you have the time, take in as much of the Colosseum as possible, including a tour of the substructures, the highest points, and around the exterior. A knowledgeable guide or doing your homework about the site will make any visit that much better.
Of course, any visit to Rome requires a stop by the Colosseum. Here are a couple of exterior views. To say it is a massive structure is an understatement. Yes, it is large but it is massive in the sense that it is a huge pile of brick and stone, well-constructed to last centuries.
In fact, later generations used the Colosseum as a quarry for stone to build other buildings through the centuries. Moving slightly closer:
The design has survived the ages, forming the basis for most large public venues in the modern era. The Romans figured all this out and stuck with it almost two thousand years ago. The next post will show the inside. Stay tuned.
It had been 13 years since my last visit to Toledo, Spain. Far too long. Of course, I had to see the Cathedral, which has had some sprucing up since my last visit. It’s hard to capture this structure’s exterior in a single photo. Here is one attempt:
And that’s really only a small part. There’s a massive tower:
But as you can see, the closeness of the other buildings makes it a challenge to get a fair perspective.

Not the largest religious building in Toledo Spain, the Church of Cristo de la Luz, was originally built in the year 999. That’s right, more than a 1,000 years ago.
The facade features the interesting “moorish” architecture.

This building is definitely worth a stop while in Toledo as it shows the continuity from one culture to another as it evolved in this area. Do a little homework before you go and you’ll discover the details more easily.
