Club Arias, Aruba

In Savaneta, Aruba, you’ll find a bed and breakfast type of establishment called Club Arias. It’s easy to find. If you’re headed south from the airport, continue on the main road until you see this faux stone wall.

There’s room to park there. Then, after passing into the compound you’ll come upon a pleasant recreation area with a pool table as seen here.

While a game of billiards with your friends may be fun. May I suggest a dip in the pool? There are two. A large, deeper one…

…and a shallow one…

That’s a float up bar at the far end. Don’t want to be thirsty out there in the Aruban sunshine. The rooms are arranged around these pools giving you direct and immediate access to the water. A typical room features a nice bedroom like this…

…and a sitting area with micro-kitchenette like this…

The kitchenette area is off to the right, out of the frame. Then, Chef Gabby will be making you breakfast and snacks, served in the dining area. Around those pools you’ll find coolers dispensing lemonade and iced-tea at no extra charge, which is a nice bonus.

There’s a lending library here with books and games. Also available are various all terrain vehicles for exploring remote parts of the island, and there are a few worth finding. Club Arias provides an alternative to the big hotels. It is a place away from the bustle of the main tourist center. Here you can kick back in a casual fashion, do your own thing, and not have to worry about the crowds or the exorbitant prices that can sting your budget. Check it out.

Bus di Salud, Aruba

One of the candidates running for the Aruba Parliament has sponsored a mobile health clinic. It’s built into an old VW bus and here’s a look at it:

visbusaDig that groovy health bus, man. Anyway, the bus traveled around the island during the past month. At each stop, people were offered free services like blood pressure screenings, cholesterol checks, and advice on diabetes. This was a great idea, a good way to meet the people, and a very creative method of campaigning. My hat’s off to this guy. Here’s another look at the bus.

Given the big healthcare debate in the US, if I was running for office, I’d sponsor one or two of these things to drive around my district. The Aruba election is September 25, 2009. Good luck to everyone.

Bon dia.

Zeerovers Update

Zeerovers is an Aruban institution, a sort of fisherman’s wharf cum road house that can be found in Savaneta, one of the oldest settlements on the island. I’ve posted about it before and thought it was due for an update. The owners have rebuilt the seating areas out over the water, added some new dock space, and continue to host locals and visitors in a low-key atmosphere. Here is a photo of the new docks.

zeerovers1_082309I like this kind of place. You’re on the water without being in the sand. You’re close to friends new and old. And you have the opportunity for a game of dominoes, or pool, or just a chat. You might see the catch of the day coming in, or feed a pelican, or watch the local tom cat stalking around. There is no programed feel to the place, just a regular joint where you can put your feet up, kick back, and relax. Sounds just right, doesn’t it?

Bon dia from Aruba.

Urataka Center, Aruba

Urataka is a sparsely populated area located close to the geographic center of Aruba. Here you will find a good place to stop for pizza and an ice-cold drink. Take a look.

urapizzbPainted those colors, it’s hard to miss. I should also mention that this place hosts a mix of visitors going to and from the Arikok National Park as well as a local people who live in the area. So you’re sure to have a more diverse experience than other places.

urapizzcCouldn’t pass up the chance to photograph the Coca-Cola sign. Anyway, since the sign higher up talks about the best pizza, I decided to give it a try. I ordered the “meat lovers” version and here is what it looked like.

urapizzaThis was the 14″ medium which is more than enough for two people. The crust was excellent by the way and the only thing this pizza needed was a little more sauce. Still, it was very good and I highly recommend it if you’re on the island and need a pizza fix. While waiting for the meal, I checked out the scenery and discovered this sign on the wall:

urapizzdNo one from the club was around at the time of my visit, probably because I was there on Sunday and these are the Terrible Tuesday Riders. There are a number of motorcycle clubs on Aruba these days. Sometimes you’ll see as many as one hundred of them touring around together or parked at a place like this.

Enjoy your visit, don’t eat too much and always enjoy your Coca-Cola ice-cold. Bon dia from Aruba.
