Headwinds

Today was the first day riding my bicycle here in Aruba in a long time. I remembered the steady trade winds that Aruba is famous for. Similarly, I’ve been riding more than 125 miles per week in the States before arriving here. Nonetheless, those headwinds literally held me back. WOW! 15 TO 20 knots on the bow is enough to double the workout, which is a good thing. I figured I would ride into the wind on the way out, then turn with the wind for the ride back. This plan worked generally, but I was puffing that first half hour or forty-five minutes to the point where I was contemplating a good puke just to relieve the manifold pressure. Anyway, sailing back was easier but I burned out earlier so I was unable to take full advantage of the push.

If you need to train for a road race and want some challenging conditions, come to Aruba and ride mostly to the south, south east. Works every time.

Cocktail Hour

Cocktail Hour seems to have fallen by the wayside. I’m not sure why. Several years ago, I instituted cocktail hour and I’ve been sticking to it as often as is practical. For instance, here’s a photo of my favorite drink from just a day ago.

charlies_drinkYes, I had this one at Charlie’s Bar in San Nicolaas, Aruba. But back to Cocktail Hour as a concept. The idea, for me, is to sit back, relax, reflect on the day, ponder what remains, and consider the future. Now, this is not an extreme effort, but a natural, organic unfolding. Call it a chance to let the mind roam without the usual boundaries of work or organized play. Often times, people jump from work, to home, to other activities without a bit of decompression. That’s a shame. An hour of calm is a good way to prepare for the storm.

Give it a try with the beverage of your choice.

Handwriting Analysis

Mont Blanc hosted a fun event last week. They introduced some new fountain pens, watches, and other exotic wares at their King of Prussia, PA, USA location. They were good enough to invite me, and I showed up toting my favorite Mont Blanc pen, one that’s written much of several novels. Now, I’ve never been one to go in for psychics and the like but Mont Blanc had a handwriting analyst on hand, one Paula Sassi. Let me tell you dear readers of The Bent Page, this lady knew her stuff! Here’s a photo of her after the analysis discussed below. In the photo we’re chatting about my notebook.

In the first place, she asked that I write out a single sentence and then my signature. She proceeded to interpret these after a few moments of contemplation. Well, she had my personality pegged, flaws and all, to such a degree that my wife nearly blacked out. No kidding! More than just general traits, she zeroed in on the specifics and I kept my mouth shut, partly out of awe and partly because I didn’t want to give her any clues. All I can say is this lady knows how to delve into your characteristics with nothing more than a few lines on paper.

Thus, my thanks go out to Mont Blanc for the invitation to a thrilling event. Plus it was interesting to see their new fountain pens as well as a few old standbys. Keep up the good work, fellows, but remember, they’re hard to wear out.
