Helicopter Flying, Aruba

For several years, I’ve wanted to take the helicopter tour of Aruba. I know the island very well from ground level, and I’ve seen it when arriving and departing via commercial aircraft. However, it was time to see it from about 500 above ground level. In order to stay on budget, I combined a bit of sight-seeing with a real estate photo mission. Worked out perfectly. So, here’s a video showing takeoff from the Seaport Marina, flying north along the low- and high-rise hotel area to the Marriott Complex. Next, we turned inland toward Paradera then south to Spanish Lagoon and my neighborhood of Savaneta. From there it’s inland toward the windmills at Vader Piet, an important location in my next novel, Hacha’s Gold. Finally, a turn north and west, past the Palo Margo raceway and along the coast to the heliport. Check it out.

The pilot did an excellent job of orbiting around the sites I wanted to photograph. There is a fair amount of traffic in and out of the Queen Beatrix Airport, which is very close to where we were flying. He had to juggle the control tower’s orders while navigating to and from my requests. The flight wasn’t cheap, but it was worth every cent. If you’re in Aruba, don’t miss the chance to see the island from up there.

Bon dia from Aruba.

Rum Reef Aruba

Rum Reef Aruba is located where the old Esso club used to be between Baby and Rodgers Beaches, at the southern tip of the island.

You can’t miss the place as you drive down the lane toward the ocean. There’s a welcoming bar, covered seating, and friendly people to serve you the beverages and snacks of your choice.

JADS dive shop is adjacent to the place, too. Here you can launch diving adventure, get snorkle equipment, and check in with the professionals who know what they’re doing. On the other side of Rum Reef, you’ll find a gift shop featuring local crafts.

There’s also a little store for those forgotten essentials.

All this convenient to your visit to/from Baby Beach. Enjoy roaming about the island and don’t forget to check out these kinds of places. More often that not, you’ll have a great experience that you might have otherwise missed.

Bon dia.

Warning Signs

The ocean can be a dangerous place. Rip currents, undertow, the works. When you see one of these signs, take heed.

Surely, you don’t want to end up tossed about like that figure. Even here in Aruba, where the water can be calm most of the year, you’ll find some tricky conditions. Keep your vacation safe by paying close attention to local information.

Skydive Aruba!

My wife and I were walking on the beach this Sunday morning. Overhead came the sound of a small aircraft. I watched him circling upward until he was almost out of sight. Lo and behold, out jumped a couple of parachutists. Yes, this is Skydive Aruba. Here’s a short video of what I saw.

I was impressed with the amount of control each of the jumpers had in the gusty winds. They both seemed to almost hover over the landing zone, then dropped in. I’ll wager that takes a bit of practice. At any rate, just another fun thing to do on the island. However, I’ll stick with the plane.

Bon dia.
