Riverstone Cafe, Exton, PA (USA)

Sunday Brunch is one of those old institutions I used to enjoy very much. Started way back in college, but that’s another story. Anyway, stopped in to the Riverstone Cafe in Exton, PA for a brunch this week. I found it fresh, tasty, and with plenty of options. The great service made the meal a joy. Here’s a look at some of the offerings, including oysters on the half shell:

Of course you also see that salmon there with all the trimmings. As mentioned, here’s a look at the desserts:

Well, now that I ate too much, I get to spend plenty of extra hours in the gym. Enjoy every meal!

Airline Breakfast

Thanks to the dogged accumulation and clever application of frequent flier miles, I’m able to fly in the front of the plane, which means less these days than it used to. Still, there is a bit of food and a steady flow of drinks. For example, during a recent departure from Aruba, the following breakfast was enjoyed:

American Airlines breakfast from Aruba to Miami.

All the essentials were there from orange juice and fruit to the quiche and grilled tomato. Seriously, this was a tasty treat, albeit a small one compared to my usual breakfast. The cabin staff was friendly and helpful, the way they always are aboard American, at least in my experience. Enjoy your flight and please cooperate with all the directives issued by the captain and crew. They are looking out for your safety and comfort.

On the Griddle, Aruba

Just got back from an early morning visit to the gym and it was time to refuel. Loaded up the griddle with some of my breakfast favorites, a couple of fried eggs, pepper jack cheese on top, grilled tomato, and some sautéed asparagus for contrast and wacky taste. Here’s the photo:

Add some turkey bacon, glass of juice, half a gallon of water… you’re all set. That little griddle has served me well, cooking breakfast and other meals for more than four years now. I did away with the full-size stove. It threw too much heat into the shack. Better to have a grill outside and this little Presto number on the inside. Efficient, inexpensive, perfect. Eat well. You’re worth it!

Classic Breakfast

Regular readers of The Bent Page know that breakfast is my favorite meal. (Actually, I enjoy every meal but I had to pick one as number one and breakfast took the spot.) Well, one of my favorite places to have breakfast, aside of my kitchen table, is The Classic Diner in Malvern, Pennsylvania, USA. This place is the hands down winner for breakfast foods diner-style in my range of artery-plugging places.

The Classic Diner is located on Route 30. You can’t miss it because there’s always two dozen cars parked in the lot and a line of people out the door. I sneak in here about once every ten days when I’m in the area. Back to the food. When you order a plate of scrambled eggs with bacon and rye toast, this is what they present at your table.

I actually started whaling on that before taking the photo, so I apologize for the mess. Trust me, the presentation is fantastic. This is not your average diner. The Classic has it’s own line of bacon that you can see there, which they cut about 1/8 inch thick and slow fry on the griddle. It is smoky, chewy, and delicious. The potatoes are also excellent, not the usual re-fried been on the side since 4AM kind.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this place is that the prices are only about one or two dollars more per plate than your run of the mill diner. Given that the service is as good as any elegant supper spot, the quality of the food equally high, and the quantity enough to stuff two people from every plate, the value can not be beat. Did I mention they bake their own breads which are for sale by the loaf? Did I mention they bake their own sticky buns for the table or take away? Did I mention you could eat yourself into oblivion here?

Thus, if you’re in the Philadelphia area, don’t miss The Classic Diner. (In a couple of months I’ll post about their cheeseburgers. Just take your favorite cut of steak and make it into a burger. Yes, that good.)
