Gathering Sound EFX

A few years ago, I purchased the ZOOM H4n digital recorder. What a fantastic device! I’ve used it on countless video projects, everything from music videos to vlog studio work, the whole range. Lately, I’ve been out gathering sound EFX, building a library of original sounds for use in current and future endeavors. Here you see me atop the water tank hill in Savaneta, Aruba, DWI:

For such a small, lightweight device, the H4n works like a dream. Multiple inputs, recording modes, and a pair of built in stereo mics. Really, this is a requirement for any production. Get one. Use it. Enjoy the beauty of sound.

Inbound tanker… (Aruba)

While out making some video, I spotted this inbound tanker off the coast of Savaneta, Aruba.

There’s actually quite a bit of ship traffic in the seas around Aruba. In the evening, you can look out and see the ship lights out there. And during the day, if you go atop the Casi Bari rocks, you can see them as well. I’m sure the crews would like to take a break on the island.

Rincón Criollo, Aruba

Rincón Criollo is a Cuban restaurant located on the main road in the middle of Savaneta, Aruba. You can’t miss the place because here’s a view:

A very nice and eager fellow operates the business. Here you’ll find hearty food at very reasonable prices. If you like Cuban style coffee, which a friend of mine does, you can have that as well. Here’s a look inside:

So, starting light, here’s a look at a plain salad:

I was in the mood for something more filling and with with the carne a la planca, which you see in the next photo:

While we were there, we bumped into other friends, one of whom was enjoying a fried chicken dish you see next:

For those of you interested in the current menu with prices, here’s a final photo:

While not shown in this post, I did eat here before and had the Cuban Sandwich. Very good and exactly what you’d expect. Therefore, if you’re on the road in Aruba (maybe headed back and forth to Baby Beach or just riding around) stop by this place for some friendly atmosphere and decent food that will keep you on budget. Bon dia.

Cliff the feline border collie

Cliff is the little black cat in the photo below. He’s a stray, fed regularly by some people in the neighborhood of Savaneta, Aruba. As you can also see in the photo, Cliff herds the chickens that are also taken care of by the same people. It’s amazing to watch Cliff, who seems to keep the chickens away from the nearby road and generally in the vicinity of the food and water bowls.

I’m not sure if Cliff has a “snack” once in a while. Whatever the case, this seems to be an example of confused identity on the part of Cliff who might have been a border collie in a previous life. You never know.
