Restaurante Botín, Madrid (2014)

Restaurante Botín has the honor of being the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the world. And for good reason. I’ve eaten here many times and each time it has been fantastic.

It’s located just off the Plaza Mayor. A reservation is a good idea, but I’ve often just popped in and got a table. I keep the meals simple here, going with traditional favorites and always starting with a bottle of wine.

I started this particular lunch with a salad, but forget to snap a photo until I was half way through:

For the main dish, I like traditional local fare, such as this roast chicken with potatoes:

It was perfectly cooked and delicious, served by professional staff that know the business. Of course, dessert and coffee is a must. Here you have a chocolate cake and apple torte, two favorites:

Restaurante El Bernadino, 2014

As long as we’re in Segovia, Spain, let’s stop for lunch at El Bernadino, another favorite of mine, where I have dined many times.

Here you’ll find all the traditional foods of Segovia and Spain in general. You can sit inside or out. I like to sit inside.

I started with the fabada Asturiana, a delicious bean soup that could have been the entire meal, as you see in the next photo:

Next I had the roast baby pig, which I did not take a photo of because I was enthusiastically enjoying the meal. Sorry about that. However, here’s a look at dessert:

While this restaurant does serve quite a few tourists, you will not the significant population of locals dining there, too. It’s a busy place, but there are three levels of seating so you’re sure to get a table quickly. Enjoy a bottle of wine from the extensive list. Worth every euro.

 

Restaurante Corrillo, Salamanca, Spain (2014)

Restaurante Corrillo is located around the corner from many of the major attractions in the heart of old Salamanca. Here you can have a tasty lunch, a decent bottle of wine, and enjoy the local scene.

We went with choices from the menu of the day, starting with a shrimp cocktail:

Our main course was chicken in an apple reduction that was quite tasty:

Of course there was a bottle of wine to enjoy, another delicious albariño:

We lingered here, taking a break from walking through the heat of the day. There’s plenty to see and do in Salamanca, including a spectacular basilica. More on that soon.

French Cannoli (from Rocco’s, NYC)

Way back in 1986, I came across Rocco’s Pastry Shop on Bleeker Street in New York City. We’ve had a close relationship ever since because I love pastry and Rocco’s makes some of the best. My favorite quick and ready item is the French Cannoli with almonds you see here:

The pastry is incredibly light, the custard filling cool and balanced, the toasted, shaved almonds the perfect crunch counterpoint. Yes, it’s that good and you should go get one right away to see for yourself. Of course, there are many other baked items to enjoy at Rocco’s, where they also serve various Italian coffees. Enjoy every meal.
