Classic Diner (January 2014)

The Classic Diner in Malvern, PA, USA, is a favorite stop of mine. Breakfast and lunch here is a delicious feast at a reasonable price with great service. Make sure you are HUNGRY before you get here because the portions are large. I might also add, they use the best ingredients. So let’s start healthy, with a spinach salad that you see here:

That’s a beautiful salad, no doubt about it. And dig the lox on the side with capers, eh? Nice. For those who really need to fill up, try the cheeseburger with a side of onion rings that you see next:

That, my friends, is one good burger. The onion rings… crispy and sweet, the way you like them. Again, service is exceptional here and prices are reasonable. Be advised, the place gets BUSY, so go slightly off peak breakfast and lunch times. Enjoy every meal.

Not Retro, Just Real!

The Frazer Diner sits on the north side of Route 30 in Frazer, PA, USA. If you’re passing through this area and you’re looking for a true diner experience, then the Frazer Diner is the place to go.

You can smell the eggs and bacon frying as soon as you pass through the door.The place has the long counter with the pastries under glass at your elbow and the pass through from the kitchen straight ahead. Check out that giant coffee urn, too. Probably five gallons of joe on hand just in case you need to revive from a wicked night on the town. There are some tables along the other wall, but the counter is where the action is. Conversation between the customers and so forth will give you a reason to listen and laugh. Good club sandwich if you’re there for lunch. Either way, enjoy it. There aren’t too many places like this left.

Waverly Restaurant (NYC)

The Waverly is really a diner, a real New York City diner, not a theme park styled imitation. I first visited this place in 1986 and it’s been cranking out the breakfast hits for me ever since. Lately, my visits are fewer and farther between, but enjoyable when they occur. If you’re looking for a breakfast served quick and hot, this is the place. Here’s a view of the outside.

The above photo shows how the place looks at about 6:30 in the morning. Can’t miss the retro neon. The most recent interior renovations have rendered the counter a bit shorter, but there are more booths and it is a little easier to move through the joint when it gets crowded, which it does. Scrambled eggs and bacon, French toast, all the breakfast favorites can be had here in less than five minutes. Stop in and find out for yourself.

The Diner Experience

There are places to eat and then there are places to eat. I prefer the diner experience to driving past a window and having somebody toss a bag of pre-chewed gruel into my vehicle. Might as well sit down, use a fork and knife, maybe read the newspaper or a book if you don’t have someone along to chat. Hence, the diner was invented by some ingenious person. Aren’t we all grateful? Absolutely. Now the diner comes in many forms, the squat silver box by the side of the road, the first floor on the corner in the city, or a re-use/remodel of an existing building as in the case of The Coffee Station in Morton, PA. The Coffee Station used to be immediately adjacent to the tracks in this little town west of Philadelphia. Then a bank only a few dozen yards away closed and The Coffee Station relocated there. Dig that jazzy music I put on there, eh? Yeah, anyway, remember the old tiny tabletop jukeboxes in the old diners. They were a blast. For some. Back to the Coffee Station. You’ll get a decent meal here, either breakfast or lunch. It’s the kind of place for scrambled eggs and bacon or pancakes and sausage. There’s also a good club sandwich. You know, the kind of food you expect at a diner. The service is on top of things, which is important because you’re not looking to spend all day, just grab a bite, say hello, and get on with it, whatever it happens to be. Enjoy!
