Learning to Fly, video

Earning a pilot’s license is one of the most rewarding things you can do. I learned to fly at TAS, Inc., located at the Brandywine Airport in West Chester, PA, USA. Here’s a video showing some great footage both in the air and on the ground.

As you saw in the video, TAS has been teaching people to fly for more than 20 years. Not only were my instructors great pilots, they were friendly people who enjoyed the process of teaching a rookie how to fly. The right instructor will help you along the way, and if you have a good attitude, you’ll be flying solo in no time. Remember, always do your checklist!

West Chester Story Slam

At the West Chester Story Slam you’ll hear great tales told by regular people. I attended a few of these before stepping up to the plate to tell one of my own. The rules are simple: 5 minutes or less, a true story, and consistent with the theme. Well, last night, the theme was “panic switch.” The stories were brilliant, including one about a guy and his wife camping in the woods that was alternately chilling and hilarious. I told one about a 1997 business trip to Cozumel, Mexico. I was in a dive bar with the fellow I was doing business with when a couple of Norse Vikings thought we were checking out their women. One huge guy (think Chewbacca from Star Wars) comes across the room, picks me out of my chair like a little kid and starts screaming at me in Norwegian or something. I escaped with no damage, but the panic switch was flipped. It must have been a good story, because the three judges awarded me first place for the night. Here’s the screen shot from the Story Slam website:

What a thrill to be a first-timer and win the prize! Too bad I won’t be around for the November Story Slam to compete for the 2012 championship. I will definitely be attending as many of these that I can next year. They’re held at Victory Brewing Co. in Downingtown, PA on the second Tuesday of the month. See http://www.wcstoryslam.com for more info. Stop by, enjoy some food and micro-brews, and of course, the great story telling.

Termini Bros., tiramisu

While at the Reading Terminal Market last week, I stopped by Termini Bros. for some pastry. One of my favorites is tiramisu, and they have a single-serving version that was irresistible. Here’s a photo:

Termini Bros. tiramisu.

These are made fresh so you want to eat them right away. I toted mine back to the shack, polishing it off with a quart of coffee. The flavor was all there, reminding me to keep the meals a bit smaller to save room for dessert. Termini Bros. has all kinds of pastry, cookies, and cakes, all in various sizes. Stop by there, you won’t be disappointed.

Melt Down

No, not a nuclear incident, rather a grilled cheese. I’ve been driving past this place for a while now and finally stopped in to give it a try. Pleasant surprise and mild shock. First, let’s talk about the food. There’s a row of sandwich grillers behind the counter so I ordered up the usual, ham and cheddar on Italian white bread. On the side, smoky corn chowder soup with bacon. Here’s the sandwich:

Melt Down ham and cheddar.

As you can see chips and pickle come with the sandwich. Then there was the soup, which you can see here:

Melt Down’s smoky corn chowder.

Both items were tasty and perfectly cooked, if a bit heavy. This is going to be great food on a cold, rainy November day, or in the depth of winter. Service is very friendly, too. Prices are a little high for what you get, almost $15 for the pair above with a soda. Still, if you’re on Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, PA and need a comfort food fix, this place will do a good job.
