John’s Roast Pork (May 2014)

Couldn’t resist! Had to go back to an old favorite, namely John’s Roast Pork in Philadelphia. This is the best joint for a roast pork sandwich or a cheesesteak in Philadelphia. Be sure to following the signs when you arrive:

I enjoy the cheesesteaks here as well as the roast pork. Hard to tell you which is best. This time I had a large roast pork and put some hot peppers on. It isn’t pretty, but it is tasty, as you see in the next photo:

Bavaria Restaurant, Aruba (Feb. 2014)

Bavaria Restaurant is a unique spot in Aruba, a rare German restaurant among all the other eateries. I’ve been here several times before. The food, hospitality, and beer selection are all consistent. Let me repeat, if you like German beer, you’ll find it here, such as this example:

As mentioned above, the food is authentically German, such as a potato pancake appetizer.

Or maybe you’d like to have a real pretzel with mustard like this one:

There are a nice selection of entrees, including this mixed sausage platter with red cabbage and mashed potatoes.

So, when you’re on the island and hankering for the different, give Bavaria a try. The people are friendly, the food good, and the prices very reasonable. You’ll also find some zany decor, including cuckoo clocks and various scenes from Bavaria. Enjoy!

Scabeche, Aruba

Scabeche Restaurant is located at the Caribbean Palm Village in Noord, Aruba. It’s tucked inside the the complex, which means it’s not visible from the street. You’ll walk past the pools and want to take a dip, but enjoy the food first. I had a very pleasant meal here last week as part of a large group. There were about 30 of us spread over three tables and Scabeche’s staff did a fantastic job. So, let’s get to the food. We started with some appetizers including this shrimp cocktail:

Those shrimp were quite large. There was also a nice caesar salad. But let’s see some entrees, like this grouper with mango sauce:

And how about the chicken parmesan you see here:

That chicken was perfectly cooking meaning it was juicy and over a bed of truly al dente pasta. A friend liked the rib eye steak as you see next:

Among the other high points were the vegetables, which were cooked just enough. (Sometimes in Aruba, the veggies come out bland. These were still crunch and full of flavor. I like my veggies so these were particularly tasty.) Finally, a slice of cheesecake for dessert:

All in all, a solid meal with great service. My water glass was always full and the waiters hustled around the tables so our group could eat mostly together. No easy feat and they did a great job. If you haven’t tried this place, give it a go. I think you’ll like it.

Fellini’s Cafe, Media, PA (USA)

Well, my regular Italian joint closed down a couple of years ago, and I’ve been looking for a regular spot with good food, reasonable prices, and decent atmosphere. There it was, right under my nose: Fellini’s Cafe in Media. The place is noisy and friendly, fairly priced and well-staffed. So let’s get the food. I like things simple, the old favorites. How about a caprese salad? Yeah, take a look:

I like the little extras that came with that caprese salad, a little more flavor, a little more texture. This place is going all the way. Moving right along…

Great dressing on those greens. Now for more of the usual done right  in a very, very big way, like spaghetti bolognese, enough for three people as the next photo shows:

As long as we’re into pasta, let’s double down with the seafood linguine. Check it out.

Don’t even ask about dessert. No way was there room. Plus, there was plenty to take home for the next day. As mentioned above, service here is great and the prices are almost too cheap. It’s a good thing to have a place like this to drop in on a random day when you need a food fix. I look forward to becoming a regular.
