Popi’s Restaurant, Philadelphia

In South Philadelphia, not far from the sports stadiums, you’ll find Popi’s Restaurant. This is a neighborhood place with lots of regulars, entertainment on weekends, and some very good food.

I’ve been going to Popi’s for years now, sometimes stopping in for a drink at the bar, other times having an expansive meal with friends. Either way, you’ll find yourself in a friendly environment, hosted by people who truly care about your experience.

Last night, my wife and I were there with a dear friend, the three of us at a corner table, relaxing, catching up, and generally having a great time. After a trio of salads we moved on to the entrees. Our friend ordered the chicken marsala, which is pictured below:

My wife likes Popi’s crab cakes and ordered them as her entree, as can be seen here:

I’m a simple guy and last night was looking for hearty food. Thus, I decided to go with rigatoni bolognese, an old standby.

Add a few glasses of wine, lots of conversation, a great waiter, and it all comes to a fine evening out. Popi’s is the kind of place you think of when you want a quality italian meal in a setting where you feel like you belong. The staff is on point, the hostess keeping an eye out, and everyone else in the place is enjoying themselves. That feeling is contagious, which is why I keep coming back to this place. Sometimes my wife and I will stop in just for dessert and a drink at the bar.

If you’re in the Philadelphia area, or not, give Popi’s a try. After all these years, they’ve never let me down.

Almost a grand a week…

…will buy you some top shelf food and booze. Just ask Nancy Pelosi. That was her bill for food and booze and such on her flights of fancy over the last couple of years.

I enjoy a beverage as much as this next fellow, including my beloved Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel’s, Maker’s Mark, to name a few. Similarly and judging by the size of my belly, I don’t miss any meals. At the same time, that’s a lot of chow and drink, especially considering it was during her travel time. Perhaps she was hosting a gaggle of Sumo wrestlers. You never know.

Nonetheless, I am not surprised. Royalty behaves this way. They let the little people pay for their gluttony.

Cheers! And please pass the bon bons.

Amadeus Restaurant, Aruba

Amadeus Restaurant in Aruba is a new find for me. My wife and I joined friends there for a very nice dinner out last night. Upon entering, you’ll find an appealing bar with tables in the distance as well as a staircase leading to a balcony seating area. Here’s a view of the bar.

After having a glass of wine, we took to the stairs for a table with a view. The waiter promptly brought us menus, these in the form of framed cartas with a fair selection of dishes. Two of our party started with the escargot. These snails were served in a garlic mushroom sauce that looked like this:

This is not my thing, however, both diners reported them to be very tasty and a different way of serving this delicacy. I opted for the tried and true coconut shrimp, which arrive with greens on the side as can be seen here:

We enjoyed excellent conversation through these appetizers, not to mention a few glasses of wine and beer. Then came the entrees. Two of our group had fish, one was tilapia as seen below:

The other fish from the menu was a grouper, and here is a photo:

Both individuals found the dishes tasty and well prepared. As I like ribs done many ways, I gave the West Indies Ribs a try and here is what came to the table:

The sauce is more of a tomato-like concoction that was definitely not the same old same old. After this we polished off a slice of apple pie and some chocolate ice cream. Sorry, was too full to take more photos.

I have to say, Amadeus does a great job with both the food and the service. The prices are very (VERY) reasonable for the quality of the cuisine and attentive service. (I would go so far as to say that some other places in Aruba should send their staff to Amadeus for some re-training.) Thus, if you’re on the island and looking for a good meal slightly away from the usual areas, give Amadeus a try. It’s on the road to Paradera and easy to find.

Bon dia.

Ellioti’s Restaurant, Aruba

Ellioti’s Restaurant is located near the Costa Linda timeshare in the low-rise area of the island of Aruba. You’ll find some very good food and service here.

eliotaWe arrived without reservations but with a hankering for some reliable Italian dishes. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who found us a nice table. There is a bar and seating outside, as well as a nice fellow playing the piano. I ordered a mixed salad, which arrived promptly and was well presented. Take a look:

eliotbThe greens, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers were garden-fresh, crunchy, and delicious. I appreciate a good salad to start, especially in Aruba, where vegetables (for some reason) are too often an afterthought. My wife likes a Caprese salad and here’s a view:

eliotcAgain, a very pleasant presentation. Moving on to the entrees, my wife ordered grouper in puttanesca sauce. She thought it was great and here is what it looked like.

eliotdDon’t miss that little shaving of ginger on the bottom there. I went with the tried and true spaghetti bolognese and this meat sauce was a bit sweet but very good indeed. Here it is:

elioteTo think that this was the appetizer portion! I didn’t finish it until the second half was consumed for lunch the next day.

Service here was among the best I’ve had on the island. I tipped liberally with good reason. I only wish I had gone to this place before.

Bon dia.
